# Septic pumping cost in Texas by tank size (2026)

Two statewide Texas cost guides put a 1,000-gallon pump-out at about $250 to $475; other published ranges run wider. _(Sources: [1] Texas Septic Guide; [2] Septic & Well Pro.)_

> **Note:** These are estimates published by commercial cost guides, not quotes and not an independent survey. Prices vary by company, tank size, access, distance and timing. Get written quotes from at least two companies registered with TCEQ as sludge transporters.

## How these figures were gathered

Anchor: https://texasseptichelp.com/septic-pumping-cost-texas-by-tank-size#how-these-figures-were-gathered

- **Where the numbers come from:** Every price here comes from a published cost guide and is credited to it. No independent survey of Texas pumping prices turned up, and one guide notes that Texas companies rarely post price lists. All four publishers also offer to put readers in touch with contractors. Their methods differ (see the table below) and their numbers don't always agree, so the ranges sit side by side instead of being averaged.

| Publisher | Method it states | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Texas Septic Guide | Pricing surveys of 85+ licensed Texas septic providers conducted January to March 2026, supplemented by public records from TCEQ and industry reporting. | [1] |
| Angi | Surveys of thousands of Angi customers about their project costs, paired with research from other sources such as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, academic journals, market studies and interviews with industry experts. Its figures are national, not Texas. | [5] |
| Nearby Septic | Its cost page says the figures come from published, dateable sources (not proprietary surveys), each named where it is used. The same page's footer says cost figures come from its own dated provider surveys. The two statements do not match. | [3] |
| Septic & Well Pro | No method on the Texas pumping page itself, and the page does not name sources for its figures. A site-wide page says its cost guides are researched against public sources (HomeGuide, Angi, state agency publications, EPA) and updated on a cadence. | [2], [4] |

Note: The Angi Houston figures are as reported by Nearby Septic; Angi's Houston page could not be located directly.

- **The published Houston figures disagree:** Texas Septic Guide calls Houston the lowest-priced market in Texas, at $255 to $350 for a 1,000-gallon tank. Septic & Well Pro puts Houston among the highest-priced Texas regions, at $325 to $475. Nearby Septic, citing Angi's May 2026 Houston data, gives $275 to $600 with an average of $375. Taken together, the published Houston figures run from $255 to $600, so get written quotes rather than relying on any one of them.

- **Risers:** AgriLife's 2008 fact sheet says that if a septic tank is buried more than 12 inches below the soil surface, a riser must be used on the openings to bring the lid to within 6 inches of the surface, which makes maintenance easier. TWRI's pocket guide adds that lids and risers must be secured against children and animals.

**Minimum septic tank capacities for houses (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, L-5227, 2008)** (anchor: https://texasseptichelp.com/septic-pumping-cost-texas-by-tank-size#minimum-tank-sizes-table)

| Bedrooms | House size | Minimum tank capacity (gallons) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 or 2 | less than 1,500 sq ft | 750 |
| 3 | less than 2,500 sq ft | 1,000 |
| 4 | less than 3,500 sq ft | 1,250 |
| 5 | less than 4,500 sq ft | 1,250 |
| 6 | less than 5,500 sq ft | 1,315 |

- **Conflicting figure in one cost guide:** Septic & Well Pro states that a five-bedroom home needs a 1,500-gallon tank. AgriLife's table lists 1,250 gallons as the minimum for five bedrooms under 4,500 sq ft. Installers may fit a larger tank than the minimum, so check your permit.

## Spray irrigation in 2025 septic permits near Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth

Anchor: https://texasseptichelp.com/septic-pumping-cost-texas-by-tank-size#aerobic-spray-systems-by-county

For each county, the table shows how many septic system permits it issued in 2025 and how many of those were for surface (spray) irrigation systems.

- **Terms used in the table:** An authorization to construct is the permitting authority's written permission to build a septic system; it is the first part of the system's permit. An authorized agent is a local government to which TCEQ has delegated the septic permit program for its area.

**Septic system permits issued (authorizations to construct) in 2025 by each county as TCEQ's authorized agent** (anchor: https://texasseptichelp.com/septic-pumping-cost-texas-by-tank-size#surface-irrigation-2025-table)

| County (authorized agent) | Septic system permits issued (authorizations to construct), 2025 | With surface irrigation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Harris County | 736 | 324 |
| Fort Bend County | 463 | 389 |
| Montgomery County | 1,821 | 1,469 |
| Collin County | 620 | 428 |
| Denton County | 325 | 293 |
| Dallas County | 80 | 61 |
| Tarrant County | 273 | 184 |
| Rockwall County | 51 | 47 |
| All Texas authorized agents | 41,990 | 24,392 |

_Sources: [10] Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)._

Note: Counts cover only the county itself as authorized agent. Cities and other agencies that issue permits inside a county report separately.

- **How common spray systems are:** In Montgomery County, 1,469 of the 1,821 permits the county issued in 2025 (about four in five) were for spray systems. In Harris County it was 324 of 736, under half. Across all Texas authorized agents it was 24,392 of 41,990, a little under three in five.
    - _Sources: [10] Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Link: https://texasseptichelp.com/septic-pumping-cost-texas-by-tank-size#spray-share-by-county_

- **What a surface irrigation system is:** A system that sprays treated effluent onto the ground. Texas rules require the effluent to be disinfected before it is sprayed. TCEQ's maintenance rules cover these systems: after the first two years, maintenance is done under contract by a licensed maintenance provider, or by the homeowner where the local permitting authority allows it.
    - _Sources: [12] Texas Administrative Code, via Cornell Legal Information Institute; [8] Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Link: https://texasseptichelp.com/septic-pumping-cost-texas-by-tank-size#what-surface-irrigation-means_
- **Why this matters for pumping cost:** Septic & Well Pro adds $50 to $100 for aerobic pump-outs because the units have more chambers. The pump-out is also separate from the aerobic maintenance contract: Fort Bend County notes that, unless the contract says otherwise, the maintenance provider is not responsible for pumping or cleaning tanks.

## Who can pump and haul the waste

Anchor: https://texasseptichelp.com/septic-pumping-cost-texas-by-tank-size#who-can-pump

- **Registration required:** Anyone who transports domestic septage (septic tank waste) in Texas must register with TCEQ as a sludge transporter and receive the registration before starting operations.

## Page history

- 2026-10-07: Added a one-sentence answer at the top and moved the page details below the main content. Added how common spray systems are by county, from the same TCEQ 2025 data. Shorter summaries and plainer wording after an outside review. Re-checked every source. No prices changed.
- 2026-10-06: All figures re-checked against their sources. Dropped one cost guide whose statements conflicted with county sources. Added tank-size minimums, TCEQ's pumping table, add-on charges and 2025 TCEQ county permit data. Each figure is now attributed to its publisher. Added each publisher's stated method, where the Houston figures disagree, and Angi's 1,750-gallon and 2,000-gallon figures.
